Abstract

The article deals with the rendering of the singular and plural forms of an English noun into Ukrainian and investigates the reasons for divergence between numbers in the source and the target texts. The cases of interchangeability of the singular and the plural forms are analysed. The divergence in number forms is caused by different rules of word combining in some syntactical patterns in English and Ukrainian. The plural is supposed to be used when rendering the so-called “common number” of an English denotative noun in the singular. The authors also describe the stylistic functions of the plural form in the target and source languages.
